I was excited to pick up the third book in this series.
“Onyx Storm” continues to follow Violet as her and her and her classmates have to travel to seek new allies. The war is getting worse, and they are going to need all of the help they can get if they want to save their home and their people.
This novel ended up being very okay to me. It certainly did not grip me in the same way that the previous two novels did, but it definitely has its memorable moments. I do agree with a lot of the reviews that I have seen that say it felt very info-dumpy in the beginning. There were so many new names and places that it felt like we were supposed to know right away.
This installment felt like it was just written to shock us as a reader. There is violence, family drama, and romance all meant to make the reader swoon more than they probably would have if this was the first installment in a series or a standalone fantasy.
The ending of this novel is an even bigger cliffhanger than the previous two, which I think says a lot because the previous two novels had major cliffhangers. I am definitely so curious to find out the why of what is going on that for that reason alone I will pick up the next book.
I am still invested in this series out of curiosity, but I am slightly disappointed in the writing direction it is going.

Holy. I just finished MINUTES ago and knew I had to write about it. The last few chapters have me REELING so hard I can’t even think of anything else right now. This book started a little slow, and a bit confusing, but it quickly turned into a nail biter and I was inhaling the pages. I haven’t read a book in less than a month in a while, and I finished this one within two weeks. Yarros has a writing style that immediately pulls you into the characters and plot so that when you’re reading, it’s as if you’re there in the scene rather than viewing it. She has combined so many different storylines, dropping subtle hints and foreshadowing for problems and events to come and I am so excited for the next book in the series. Now to wait two years! I love all the characters in this series, and love how each one is unique and has their own struggles and flaws, making them more human. Second squad is so much like a family, and I live for the banter between them as well the amount of protectiveness each of them feels. I have so many things to say about this book, too many racing thoughts, but this is my general thoughts as of right now.
Some cons of the book: I’m not entirely in love with Yarros’ writing style, it feels very cheap to me at times, but still consumable. Not that it’s terrible, and i think the good plotline makes up for it. It’s sometimes difficult to understand what’s going on, and I’ll have to reread or flip a few pages back to reorient myself, but that could just be me as a reader.

I loved Fourth Wing and the sequel was also great, but I felt like this one was way longer than it should have been. Meaning the book could have been half the length and gotten the full plot across. Most of the plot happens in the last 70 pages. I really wanted to love this book, but I definitely found it lacking compared to the other 2 in the series.

I enjoyed this more than Iron Flame but not as much as Fourth Wing. The book was slow to start and a lot of the content felt like it was the same issues/conversations as previous books which led me to being bored and craving for the storyline and relationships to progress. I enjoyed the ending a bit more, and the dragon content is really what I’m hanging onto.
