This gets a 'meh' rating. I enjoyed it but I don't think it's anything super special. I'll be continuing the series. Note to future self: nothing bad happens to the dog.

Awesome book, however the 7 book series starts to lose cohesion after book 4.

Just couldn’t get into the book for some reason. Maybe one day I’ll pick it up again, but for whatever reason whenever I planned to read it I found myself wanting to do something else. Didn’t dislike the book for any reason either.

3 named female characters, one of which had exactly two lines of dialogue. Each of these women were romantic relations of main male characters.

3 unnamed female characters, two which died within a page, one which said a few pointless lines.

12 named male characters. 6 that were main characters.

7 unnamed male characters.

1 non gendered dragon.

Even the dog was more important than any of the female characters.. what were these authors *thinking*?!

Epically, and I mean epically, failed the Bechdel test.

I am so disappointed.

Fantastic world building and magic systems. Everything was very well thought out and I wish I would have read it when it first came out. I fear that my time to enjoy this book has passed me by.

Instead of making up their own language or terms to explain the dwarven world, they used "cutesy" language or childlike language. It was extremely off-putting.

a slightly frustrating read as it was hard to get attached to any particular character. lots of really cool and interesting world building- but it rarely hovered or spent time on the parts of it that i was most interested in. some of the world felt very grimdark realism intended, and then the dwarves were handled almost like a terry prachett novel? it was hard to get a feel on what tone of fantasy you're reading. not convinced i will pick up any of the sequels, but i'm determined to find a fun dnd flavoured fanasy to read this year.
