You know that feeling when you read a classic, yet you don’t enjoy it at all and you’re not sure if what you read is overrated or you’re just an uncultured swine? That’s what I’m left with.
At first, I was absolutely enthralled by the quaint and idyllic nature of Seitsemän veljestä. But after maybe a fourth of the way in, this got so repetitive and uneventful, that I couldn’t wait for it to end.
But this book definitely marks a space in history and is a classic for a reason. Spending time with Finnish culture from “back in the day”, helped to bring light and understanding to how Finns are in modern day society. Religion, alcoholism, and forests are definitely deeply rooted in our bones and culture.

Todella vaikea lukuinen kirja minulle. Ei jäänyt mieleen mitään sen vaikealukuisuuden takia. Oli myös vähän tylsähkö, piti pakottaa itseäni lukemaan.🫠 Mutta jos jotain kiinnostaa vanhan ajan kieli, niin heille varmaan oiva kirja. Ja tällä saa hyvän kuvaelman minkälaista elämä on ollut silloin. Itseäni ei se juurikaan kiinnostanut.

Arvosana hyvin lähellä neljää tähteä, saatan nostaa vielä myöhemmin.
Lukukokemuksena välillä tuskainen kirja. Syynä tosin varmasti se, että tämä piti lukea kouluun viimeisten päivien raivolla. Loppua kohti vei kuitenkin yhä paremmin mukanaan ja viimeisten lukujen jälkeen oli jo vähän haikeaakin erota Jukolan veljesten seurasta. Ehdottomasti lukemisen arvoinen, saatan palata tämän pariin vielä joskus. (Sivuseikkana, kyllä se Seitsemän koiraveljestä tämän aika hyvin tiivistää.)

Dit boek stond al op mijn lijstje sinds ik een aantal jaar geleden aanwezig was bij een lezing van Adriaan van der Hoeven over zijn vertaling ervan. Nu eindelijk ook in de online bibliotheek beschikbaar — wat weerhoudt je er nu nog van om te beginnen?
We spreken over een familie-epos dat ik als classica eigenlijk wel klassiek zou willen noemen, ware het niet dat ik tegelijkertijd in elk hoofdstuk dacht: “wauw, zoiets heb ik nog nooit gelezen”. Het theaterachtige karakter van de dialogen werkt heel goed, en de in het nawoord door de vertaler besproken genre- en discourswisselingen creëren een diepte in het verhaal die maakt dat je het nog eens wil lezen — nee, dat je zo bij deze zeven broers in zou willen trekken. Het is een prachtig geschenk dat deze 19e eeuwse tekst nu in zulk mooi Nederlands voor een nieuw publiek beschikbaar is.

Every once in a while a wild animal would show up and threaten the brothers and, honestly, I rooted for the animals. This was the most negative reading experience I’ve had in a long time. This book had no redeeming qualities.

Required reading for all Finns at some point. I was very surpised by the book when I read it. I was expecting a Finnish classic: dreary, bleak, boring and humourless.
Instead I found myself laughing out loud several times and enjoying the adventures of these seven young men.
