I wish I’d had the time to read this book over a shorter time period as it was hard to grasp the emotions and narrative in bits.

I felt completely transported reading Matrix. The prose is humming with vitality, and the inner lives of the characters felt intimately accessible. I enjoyed that the setting and environment of the plot was very different from my current reality, being set in medieval times, and yet the human dynamics, follies and insights and epiphanies resonated with me as deeply and presently relevant. I was kept on the edge of satisfaction for almost the entire book - it’s not a romance novel and tension and strife run throughout in interpersonal relationships and general life hardships. But by the end I understood that tension and its ultimate resolution to be profoundly beautiful, true, and human. BRB, running away to a nunnery (but bringing antibiotics).

This was such an odd ride.

I bought it at the recommendation of a book seller after I told them I loved Hild, so this is definitely in my general wheelhouse of living medieval stories, especially about women BUT it was a very different style.

I did not particularly enjoy this book, it was fine. I feel like it flirted from one thing to the next in an odd way, and the main character’s imperious nature never seemed to lessen.

The descriptions of her childhood were a great redemption, and some side characters— though widely unexplored in the narrative— were brief respites from the main story.
