Took me back to The Wonder Years...with a boy who is grounded for the summer, but is allowed to help his elderly neighbor write obituaries. I enjoyed it.

I decided to read this because it's on this year's 5/6 Battle of the Books list. Definitely had to prep my daughter for the politics, and I'm guessing we'll have lots to talk about as she reads it.

I LOVED this book! Part of why I found this book so funny is that I'm a fellow nose bleeder.

Very funny. The main character is very realistic. There is even a little bit of mystery to the story about a boy who is grounded and helps an older lady write obits for the dying founding members of their dying town.

This is wicked hilarious. Totally deserved the Newbery. Bonus: Gantos narrates it.

2012 Newberry winner

Hmm. I could not get into this, which surprised me, since it's a Newbery winner and all. The voice was too self-conscious, the dialogue too stilted, the plot too distant to hold onto. I will check others' reviews and see if there's a reason to try it again, but I was uninspired to continue without promise of payoff.
