Once again the worst part was Alina Starkov. Though I have to admit that as she took a leadership role and struggled with the consequences of her immense power, she got more compelling. The book did a better job keeping up the pace than the last one, and also took a darker turn that was interesting. Nikolai was amazing.

Alina has come a long way since book 1 and really starts to find herself in siege and storm. I like a book written in first person where the main character can still surprise you.

Got bored. Not attached to the characters at all. Lifeless.

This book is loads better than the first one, which I’d give 3 stars. Nikolai is probably my favorite part of this book just because he’s such a compelling character and stands out from everyone. I really liked his friendship with Alina, who I actually like a lot better now than in book 1 because of this internal struggle she’s going through. Not a huge fan of Mail but I don’t hate him either. I’m very excited to read the next book and the rest of the books in the Grishaverse, especially Six of Crows because I heard that it’s a heist novel and people love it (and Nikolai is the main character of King of Scars?? Yes please)

Edit: after rereading the series this is my least favorite book in the entire grishaverse, but the Nikolai moments save it. also six of crows is fantastic and everybody should read it

I liked the ending. I felt like the serpent should have been the main goal of this book though, it would have provided more focus to the plot.
