I saw someone in a bookish space talking about the trend of over-explaining in books lately and I think this is a really excellent example of that concept. There is a two page section toward the end of the book where the dialog between the main characters is essentially a summary of all the plot points I'd just read. At a bit over 200 pages, this is definitely not a long book to the point where I may have forgotten the beginning or needed reflection time.

It felt like a lot of this book was filled with hand holding which was mostly harmless but some of it was to the detrement of the plot. There was a point in the middle where the thing keeping them apart on her side had been lost in numerous descriptions of their emotions being shared through their bond. I'm not sure the reason held much weight once it was revealed but I would have rather explored that motivation than how anxious they were both feeling repeatedly.

This is the type of writing issue that can often be solved over time as the writer hones their style so I'm going to give her other books a try and see what happens. I really enjoyed the monsters she filled her world with and the hints at broader world building so there is definitely potential here. Hopefully she gains trust in her readers along the way.
