I was shocked with how much I loved this. I didn't realize how badly I wantdd a fmc like Amina til I got her. Despite its length, the book never dragged. Amazing :]

It was really fun. A badass middle aged single mum pirate? Count me in. The first half was a bit better than the latter half but it was still enjoyable nevertheless.
I really loved how this story is told. Listening to the audiobook (well read, by the way) really felt like sitting at Amina's feet and hearing the oral history of her life. And what a life!
Full of adventure, loves, friendship, journeying around the Indian Ocean to visit so many interesting lands (including other realms) it is a riot of travel and adventure.
This story focuses on Amina's last adventure: she's an older woman now, a "foul-mouthed middle aged woman with a bad knee" as she describes herself. Her main goal is to keep her family safe, though her heart still yearns for the sea and smuggling adventures of her youth. But she has no choice: strong-armed into her last adventure, she reluctantly gathers her old crew back together again, and off they go in search of a missing noble's daughter.
The strength of this book lies strongly in how it's told. It's rich in description but also cheeky, and Amina's strong character voice is found throughout all her tales. A lot of her tale feels otherworldly the way the old 1000 Arabian Nights feel otherworldly. I loved the magical elements that are more and more introduced as the story goes on. I loved traveling to so many wild lands. And I really loved Amina and all the side characters.
I felt the story took a much more interesting turn once Raksh came back into the picture. He's a great foil for Amina, and far more interesting than the villain of this piece. But then the plot, while a lot of fun, is not especially the main focus. I didn't mind it all being a bit on the predictable side.
Overall I can't wait to see what the next book has in store for Amina.

He who dares does, while he who fears fails.
Great fun. Scratched my pirate itch. A little convenient at times but looking forward to other adventures with Amina al-Sarafi.

I've read this twice and loved it both times. The audiobook, for this second reading, was especially good.
