Hmm. What do I say about this book??

The writing was divine. Incredibly fast paced. I loved Mac’s character a ton. I am a little sad to say I figured out the bad guys very early on in the book but it didn’t really detract from the story too much.

I will definitely be picking more up from this writer.

The Mystery Writer was an incredibly unique and gripping story. The story follows Theo, a young woman who drops out of law school to pursue her passion of being a writer. She gets involved with another writer named Dan Murdoch, who is then tragically murdered.

The beginning of the story was incredibly captivating and had me hanging on every word. I thought the idea driving the story was also super fun and out there.

However, after the beginning, I felt like the flow of the story plateaued in the middle. This may be because I started to get confused with the story, as it quickly got hard to follow. Additionally, I struggled to relate to Theo and found it hard to connect to the characters at some times. Because I couldn’t connect with them, I found it hard to root for them throughout the story.

Still, I had a fun time reading this story, and would give it three stars.

I technically finished this yesterday (at like midnight) but it’s okay.

TEN OUT OF TEN I CANNOT SAY IT LOUD ENOUGH.

As a writer myself, I am in awe of Sulari Gentill’s writing. I am so so so in love with the way she can incorporate the writing process into what you could maybe see as foreshadowing (but you never know if the clues she’s dropping lead you to the truth… or if like the characters… you are lead astray).

I truly wish I could sit down and talk to her about this novel (and also “The Woman in the Library” because UGHHH YES) and, similarly to Dan and Theo (but without all the murder around them), talk about writing in general.
