I picked up Nigel Slater’s
The Christmas Chronicles second hand, which I couldn’t resist and then rather than racing about doing more jobs, I curled up on the sofa and delved into my new book.

‘The books. There are books in the kitchen, books in the study and books in the drawing room. There are books in my satchel, books on my desk and books by my bedside.’

I started, as you do in the middle with the current date and then read on until Christmas, then I went back to the beginning and read more. I was really taken with this book, it is nostalgic and comforting, speaking of slowing down, enjoying moments. Yes, there are some wonderful recipes as you would expect but also it is quite a joyful book and encourages you to take your time, Slater’s writing feels sumptuous but I think will speak to most readers. What I think I took from my slow afternoon, was exactly that, to slow down, take my time and concentrate on moments. No one will care if there are 57 mince pies and half a ton of gingerbread or not, for it is not that that will make our Christmas.
