This was fun! I loved The Spiderwick Chronicles as a kid, and rereading this made me remember why. And also why I grew up to be a Gravity Falls fan.
Unfortunately, there's not a whole lot here to review. It's clear that the series will deal with themes of sibling relationships, adjusting to change and processing divorce, and coming of age and deciding who you are, but while all of that is set up here, there's not enough time to have a proper arc around any of it. This book is, after all, the equivalent of a chapter or two in the types of books I tend to read these days and clearly meant to be the start of a story, not the whole of it.
That said, what is present is a fun little romp that young readers are sure to love, especially with the interactive element of solving the clues to find the field guide alongside Jared. While for adults it's mostly just good for a trip down memory lane, it's sure to be a great read for the intended audience. 4⭐️
