What a beautiful story, of life, of love -not romantic, but true- of immortality and story. A folktale itself, this tale weaves together many other folktales, connecting them to each other. In those connections, the reader is reminded of the reasons that similar folktales appear in many different cultues; while people and cultures vary, the stories that touch on universal truths touch us all. Grace Lin not only crafted this beautiful tale, but also created gorgeous artwork to illuminate her words, both in woodcuts to begin each chapter and with periodic full-color plates.

A worthy conclusion to the story begun with Where The Mountain Meets The Moon. Unfortunately, I did not realize it would tie together Grace Lin's two previous folklore novels, so I missed anything tied to Starry River of the Sky, which I haven't read.

I didn’t hear any of it but Reid was a BIG fan and couldn’t stop listening. He had head phones on and at one point couldn’t help himself and exclaimed “Wow! That was a really good part!” There are apparently little stories within the story and the other day he forgot one of the stories was part of the larger book and thought we had read it together and while trying to get me to remember told me the whole thing word for word then was like “OH I remember! It’s in When the sea turned to Silver!” And slapped his forehead

What a wonderful new story by Grace Lin. It is a little darker than her book When the Mountain Meets the Moon, but just as much fun. It is full of smaller folk/fairy tales intermixed with the larger story. This is a great book for middle schoolers, and another winner from Grace!

p.s. Some characters from her previous novel(s), make a guest appearance!

This was scarier than the first 2 books for my 7 1/2 year old. Certainly it was darker. And it was complicated, with many threads that weave together in a way that he didn't totally catch when he read most of the book by himself. He will need to read the book again with me soon, or by himself later when he's a little older, to catch the full depth of this book.
