Angsty teenager, Abigail, who grew up having to keep her night terrors a secret as to try and appear more normal... But keeping secrets can only end badly. Abigail just desperately wants to have a normal life. After her best friend finally convinces her to step out of her comfort zone everything goes awry for Abigail.
I cannot tell you how much I adore this book! Between the unlikely allies, a suspicious animal sidekicks, angels and demons, and duel prophecies this book will have you hooked! I loved the back and forth between the characters:):)
There were times you thought that you’d figure where the plot was heading and then boom the author throws you for another loop! The twists and secrets uncovered were so fun. The last few chapters had me sitting straight up in the edge of the couch needing to know wtf was going on. And of course the cliffhanger now has me in a never ending cycle of wtf is going to happen now! Still thing about this book at least once an hour it was just fantastic.
Definitely want to encourage you to read Shadow Voyager if you love angsty main characters, multiple POVs, darker YA fantasy, unlikely friendships, adventure, chosen one prophecies, rock family dynamics, spirit realms, and some indigenous Native American representation.
Also, if you love Barf we will definitely be fast friends:)

Really loved this! The characters were done well, fleshed out, relatable, as were the relationships and struggles they went through. There were so many fun dynamics between characters too! The world building was unique and I liked how there were pieces of various cultures/religions interwoven together. Really looking forward to book 2!!

“Freak, coward, pathetic and liar, no wonder your Dad was leaving you!”. That is what people said about Abigail. Since she was a little, she could see what other people don’t. Then, when she is seventeen, suddenly there is a dark, mysterious hoody figure who is following her, and she must face day by day with him…
Life combined with death. That is what I can tell you about this book. The story itself is pretty heavy for those who never read a fantasy before. I think this book is a semi-dark suspense, paranormal fantasy. The story's pace is slow, but because of this, it becomes more mysterious and suspenseful in each chapter. The character's growth, especially between Abigail and Thanatos, are better in each chapter.
From zero, Abigail became a future queen, Thanatos, from a robotic programmed knight, became a loving person. It is just wow!!! But danggg… The last chapter is a plot twist! And what happened to Thanatos is so ironic, it really breaks my heart!! Yes, I feel in love with the skeleton now hahaha. But there are several things that I think still need to explore more.

WOW! I loved this book.
I love the emotional and personal journey that Abigail goes through. Her experience coming to terms with her place in the Realms and finding the beauty in a land meant to torment her is amazing. She learns to be confident and to trust herself, while also learning that she herself is not a burden to others and that maybe, just maybe, its okay to let others into her life.
I was also struck by the themes of choice/ freewill and fate/destiny that filled her story. She is destined to fulfill a great prophecy, but she fights against it, not willing to just let destiny control her life. Then we have the blatant differences between Aaron and Thanatos, one who believes in fate, and another who believes in choices. And throughout the story we see how fate and freewill may work together.
The worldbuilding was phenomenal, letting the reader discover more about the shadow realm as Abigail learns more about it. It has this really cool blend of Grecian lore, i.e. Thanatos, the river Styxs; as well as drawing on concepts of Christianity, i.e. demons, heaven/hell. These ideas blend together so nicely to create its own mysterious realm.
I cannot wait for the next book in this series and to see more of Sharon Garrison’s work.
