I read this for the Upside Down Readathon. It is a Stranger Things themed readathon, and this book was selected as a buddy read. It truly was the perfect book for that theme, with all the season one vibes. Spooky, mysterious, supernatural... Certainly a thrilling read! I'm not sure that I'll continue the series, but I did enjoy the experience.

actual rating: 3.5 stars.
this book sucked me in SO hard, i was so intrigued and i NEEDED to find out what was going on.
that being said, i’m a little conflicted on what to rate this, because while i enjoyed it, and there were moments of good writing, other moments were kind of poorly written? mainly there were a lot of cliché middle school characters, but it didn’t ruin the book or anything.
anyway, i’d recommend if you’re looking for something spooky-borderline-scary for autumn!

Perfect read leading into October! It was delightfully creepy, the descriptions were vivid, and the pace of the book felt just-right, if a little fast with everything being revealed towards the end. I was a touch disappointed by all the unanswered questions I had by the end, but to my understanding the authors intend for there to be a sequel, so that’s probably why. A mix between Stranger Things and X-Files is a great description, although for sure if you’ve seen the former, you’re going to notice a lot of similarities. Definitely recommending to my students who love the horror genre!
A charming supernatural adventure with a lot of promise for the future. It has a lot of atmosphere in common with Stranger Things, though without any nostalgia and with a strong shot of "weird school" vibes. Looking forward to the next one!

A good read but the plot got too much bogged down by teenage drama. My favorite characters in this story are Caden and his brother Aiden. Their storyline and what ultimately happens to them both kept me listening to the audiobook till the end. I didn't like Rae or connect with her or any of the other characters. I'm interested in Book 2 solely because of Aiden and and his revenge plot but I don't know if I can slog through the school drama and all. Oh well! We'll see.
P.S. - The audio narration is good.
