Wow! I found the complexity of characters in this book so intriguing, and at most points it was hard to put down! The way Isabelle's impulsivity and sense of justice pushed her to rebel had me rooting for her but on the edge of my seat so often. The way that Vianne dismissed her and her values was hard but made sense amongst the time and family dynamic. I loved seeing Vianne grow into her own sense of rebellion in a more quiet way, and also to see her wrestling with the realities of having a Nazi billeting with her family. It was interesting to see how they both managed competing priorities and showed their humanity through such devastation.

My heart was ripped out of my chest multiple times while reading this book as I was constantly reminded of the despicable things that happened in World War II. This was only a glimpse of what could have happened to some people, but it pulls on your emotional heartstrings.
