This is a heartbreaking story showing a family pre, during and post war. It’s a flawed family and characters who do what they need to survive but also beyond. They’re resilient and brave. But it’s a heartbreaking story, very harrowing and hard to read at times.

I really wished a few different things happened in the plot - particularly with the first nazi at vivannes & later Ari. But the whole book was basically one hard thing after another and seeing how these characters live in an impossible world.

Took my longer to read than anticipated due to library holds I needed to finish before this one. But wow, this story is packed with redemption, love, family as a core value, and beauty.
