A buried secret held for thirty years…

This was a good book on a whole and a much faster pace than Cragside, the previous book in this series.

This story follows two lines of enquiry. One is thirty years old and concerns a young student. The other lines of enquiry become apparent further on in the book, again concerning another student. A total of four murders are being investigated. Old secrets are unfolded as the book progresses which entices the reader to carry on reading. The book is set around Kielder Water and the local villages and farms.

The point of views from the story are held together by four characters – DCI Ryan, two suspects, DI Mackenzie and Dr Anna Taylor. This allowed multiple perspectives to be attained by the reader rather than just a singular point of view. A key finding in this book is that the investigating officer from the previous case is revealed to the audience as DCS Gregson. DCI Ryan and DS Philips visit Gregson in prison which rises the audiences suspicion into his role in the case.

A key fact or quote I liked from the book was “the Orionid meteor shower happens every October, when Earth’s orbit intersects with the stream of debris left by Halley’s Comet. It burns up inside our atmosphere, usually at a speed of around sixty-six kilometres per second” – p134

I started this book on Friday 19th and was almost halfway through the book by Sunday evening. It took me just over a week to finish this book. Overall, I would recommend this book and this series to anyone who is known to Northumberland and avid readers of the crime genre. This book does not have to be read after the previous books in the series. The next book in this series is Seven Bridges.
