Definitely the best and most comprehensive Bowie book I've read (close second would be The Man Who Sold the World by Peter Doggett which goes into more detail about the conception of individual songs, but only during the 60's/70's).
This book is well researched, and objective about its subject (the worst thing I've heard about Bowie isn't mentioned, but other than that the author doesn't any away from aspects of either his behaviour or music which are less appealing). There's a lot of stuff here I've never heard before, and pictures I've never seen, and I just can't think what else would be needed in a Bowie book

Good book, however it lost one star because he only gives one single sentence - in parenthesis! - to the movie Labyrinth and never breathes a word about the album, not even in the discography in the back. A very glaring omission considering it was a gateway for another generation of Bowie fans. The epilogue is well written - realistic, but still allows for a small glimmer of hope for more to come.

A terrific biography. Trynka is obviously a big fan, but his writing is very even-handed and his focus is very much on the music. He certainly deals with Bowie's private life, but it's not his main focus, and it's not in the least sensationalised or judged. A well-written biography about a fascinating man.

I haven't read a biography in awhile and there's probably a reason for that. Overall, this was an interesting enough read, but I'm used to a reading cohesive stories and this is much more anecdotal. Fans of a variety of music from the second half of the 20th century or of David Bowie will probably find this a quality read.
