Disappointed that Marj wasn’t as much of a strategic business owner as I wanted her to be. I think the author missed an opportunity to portray the hardships that limited a female successor in America.
Marrying, remarrying, and decorating mansions wasn’t super interesting to me. But perhaps that was the point?

This story details the life of Marjorie Merriweather Post, the heiress to the General Foods empire (formerly Post Foods) and a formidable woman in her own right. The novel begins in Battle Creek, MI, where Marjorie and her family are living a meager existence until her hardworking father invents Grape Nuts cereal. The story then follows Marjorie’s life throughout the next 8 decades, detailing her rise into success and wealth, her 4(!) marriages, parenthood, philanthropic efforts, her estates across the US, friendship and run-ins with society’s elite (including nearly every presidential candidate during her lifetime) and other adventures.
Having never heard of Marjorie Post before picking up this book, I thought her story was fascinating. She was a woman before her time and the covert reason behind much of General Foods’ success. (I really enjoyed the bit about launching frozen foods into the market.) She sounds like she was a force!
I wouldn’t consider this book “long,” but it read that way. While I really enjoyed the story, I found it dragging at times.

Fascinating just how much changed in America in the early 1900s and the Post family had much to do with it. I love a biography style book, especially of someone I hadn't known at all before reading. She certainly led a life and at times I felt like she could have been part of the inspiration for the 7 husband's of Evelyn Hugo even!

What a wonderful story about a generous woman. I listened via audiobook. The beginning of the book, the narrator used a Transatlantic accent for one of the characters and it was really annoying. Almost made me not want to continue. But eventually that character was out of the story and it really started to enjoy the story instead of being fixated on the accent.

This book was not well written. It was a gloat. The entire book. Marjorie Merriwether Post was a great woman but you would never guess that through this book. I did my own background on her. Read other books about Post. Skip this one, unless you.want to know about all the houses she had, the expensive items she bought and the husband's she divorced.
