Every Dead Thing

John Connolly

This was (surprisingly) the first thriller I’ve ever read. It was my second book by Connolly, so I knew I would enjoy the writing style and thought I’d give it a go. I’m so glad that I did! I absolutely couldn’t put it down. I love the main character and it was one of the first times I didn’t have the mystery totally figured out before nearing the end. I will for sure be continuing on with this series. The best thing that I can say about this novel is that I don’t enjoy realistic horror too much as, quite honestly, it scares me, and yet I couldn’t stop thinking about this book. Highly recommended.

DID NOT FINISH

I read about a third of this novel, but it just wasn't holding my interest.

good but hard to read

The crime at the heart of this story is truly gruesome, not for the faint of heart, but Charlie Parker struck a sympathetic note with me and I felt bonded to him by the time it was all over. I've been reading mystery novels so long that I can often see the ending coming well before it's in sight, but Connolly managed to surprise me and evoke a since of place that seems true. I just happened to be reading the second half of this novel while visiting New Orleans and I could feel no difference between this New Orleans that Connolly conjured and the one I experienced for myself, except for not getting closely involved with a serial killer and having a much longer wait to get a table at Mother's. I'm delighted that there is a whole series just waiting for me.

dark mysterious sad tense medium-paced

I started revisiting the whole Parker-series from the start. Way rougher start then I remembered. I took 5 days off from reading it in the middle of it.

I didn't like it. Lots of people did but it was too wam bam thank you, ma'am, for the story and way too many details with the murder and face cutting off. I'd like that a little bit more in reverse.
