Ate this book up and left no crumbs. Wish I could write a cohesive review right now, but I finished this book a day before the eras concert night 1. Which has nothing to do with this book or it’s review, but is important to note because I literally can’t think of anything else right now. I’m not sorry.

Unfortunately we've hit a bit of book two syndrome and this just didnt live up to the first book, it was still a good read, just didnt grab my attention the way the first did.

'House of Pounding Hearts' book two of Olivia Wildenstein's The Kingdom of Crows series. I read it after book one the little novella 'House of Rising Sands' Taking place immediately the events in 'House of Beating Hearts, Fallon has freed Lore, the Crow King. She did so in order to see herself on the Lucin throne, but as her quest unfolded she saw a new side of Dante, one she doesn't want to share a throne with. Lore on the other hand tricked her and has now taken her captive in his kingdom all in the name of protecting her, for she is his curse breaker and he's not done with her yet.

I completely ate this book up, it wasn't in my list to read yet, ive been trying to read all my older tbr books first but I loved book one so much that I needed more. The first half of this book was just as good, I was really enjoying the continuation and then suddenly not so much. Little things just started to bug me. After Fallon gives in and becomes mates with Lore in more than just name I felt like every interaction between them just became about sex and we lost all their fun quips and banter. I didnt enjoy the story like of the King of Nebba wanting her. She went from a poor nobody halfling to suddenly the rulers of three different kingdoms all want her and she's so amazing. Oh and plus just being near her is too much for Antoni, cause this girl is just so desirable. I was hoping we had left love triangle stuff behind. On top of that Fallon seems to regress, a lot, she had such a beautiful arch in the first book and came a long way in finding herself and her strength and now she's back to being very immature, impulsive and childish. I can understand her frustration and unhappiness at being pretty much a prisoner in the Sky Kingdom but I don't understand what she wants to return to. Life was kinda shitty for her before at her previous home and now she's essentially their number two enemy, She's aware from friends coming there that she knows shit has hit the fan and she's being blamed for Marco's death, how she gets the idea that she can return mystifies me. And it doesn't make sense with how the first book is written, she beforehand as a nobody was afraid of being put to death by sea serpent for merely putting a toe of of line, for offending a pureling, for acting above ones stations. Why isn't she scared that they'll kill her after she had their king offed and revived their number one enemy? Theres zero logic to her actions, no forethought, no caring of the ones around her. Yes she cares for her friends and those she thought was her family but her caring is kinda selfish, she wants to be with them and misses them and loves them but she's not thinking about them and their wants. I'm finding it harder and harder to believe that a 700 plus year old would not be banging his head against the wall for being shackled with this head case.

I am still loving the setting, the weird races, the different magical people, the canals, the Italian feel and then on the flip side the Celtic warriors that are the crows, the interpersonal relationships between people when it comes to races.

I have already started the third book and its following a similar trend to book two.

m legitimately speechless!! I'm so glad I'm reading these well after their release and don't have to wait to know what happens!

Lore’s every appearance makes me fall a little more in love with him! There are so many characters whose motives I am highly suspicious of at this point. I feel like every single person has their own agenda, and very few actually care about how their machinations will play out in the long term.

This was not good. The world building is poor, the motivations for the characters are dumb. The FMC is so so so so so annoying. She doesn’t have an OUNCE of critical thinking. The romance is not romance. I was promised banter and there was no flirty banter it went from “I hate you” to you’re my fated mate and don’t stop boning me in like an instant. The FMC is just a straight up moron. She’s annoying, whiny, and has literally no purpose in life except being the chosen one in a prophecy.

“Open your eyes, mo khrà, so I can see how your heart beats for me….”
