It took days for me to write this review, not because the book is bad and it was difficult to critique, but because I didn't feel the need to explain to anyone how great it is. It was self-evident how amazing this novel is. For me, that's true in life in general: when you're sure, you don't need assurance; you just know its worth.

When I first saw this pitched as a mix between The Love Hypothesis and The Hating Game—two of my favorite books—I was instantly sold. This book captured the best elements of those books: banter and academia. I thoroughly enjoyed every single exchange between Sadie and Jonah, and they made me laugh out loud multiple times. The progression of their relationship was so nicely paced; it felt like real life. I love how they ended up depending on each other, even as nemeses—their rivalry unexpectedly forging a bond they didn't know they needed. It was evident even in their domestic scenes, where it felt like they were already living as a married couple, they just didn't know it yet. Also, Jonah's footnotes? Fantastic! I was always waiting for his POV chapters to read what he had in mind. It was such a smart idea.

I want to thank Simon & Schuster Australia for the uncorrected proof I won in a giveaway. This is the first Jodi McAlister book I've read, and I must say it surely won't be the last. The song choice for this book is "The Tortured Poets Department" by Taylor Swift. I don't know if it makes sense, but while reading the book, I could just hear the song playing in the back of my mind.

This was the perfect little romance book! Jodi McAlister is a master of the romance genre. This book was the perfect rivals to lovers story, with the added fun of a “one bed” trope and the always incredible “it was never fake for me”. Highly recommend and I can’t wait to explore the stories of other characters!
