Liked the implications of artificial beings, overpopulation, predictions.

This was a decent book... I'm just starting the Foundation books and wanted to read them in the order Asimov suggested. I'm a big fan of Daneel from the Elijah Baley books, and especially Robots and Empire, yet while this book was overflowing with Daneel, he is so far removed from the character that he once was that it...doesn't really feel like him. He's too human now in personality and emotion, particularly in dialogue and gesture, that the robotic element I so love in Asimov's books is... kinda gone.. even though a robot is controlling the world. He feels more devious now (not in a negative way, but just in a...sneaky sort of way) instead of being innocent/what-you-see-is-what-you-get. I love that about Asimov's robots but sadly, Daneel has become a bit -too- advanced for my tastes...
I still found the book enjoyable and I liked the character of Raych, but otherwise, it's kind of soso to me, and I'm not sure if I would read it again when I could instead read Robots and Empire or the other Lije Baley books...or Positronic Man, etc etc....

Pentru vremea la care a fost scrisa, pentru idee si actiune, pentru viziunea extraordinara - 5 stele. Asimov nu este insa un povestas. Actiunea cartii vine din dialog. Ritmul e uneori prea alert, autorul trece in graba peste anumite momente, cu rigiditatea unui matematician care spune pentru cineva ce trebuie sa inteleaga din prima. Nu am simtit nevoia sa reiau pasaje, sa imi clarific lucruri. Nu m-a impresionat in mod special ceva. Imi place mult imaginea de ansamblu a cartii, lumea pe care Asimov a reusit sa o construiasca. Un vizionar! Daca a intrevazut inovatie in multe planuri, m-a surprins ca in domeniul scolii lucrurile sunt cam ca azi: relatia profesor - elev e aceeasi, se tin prelegeri, exista cursuri fizice si studiu individual. Da, de citit.
I read a lot of great books as a young teenager. The Foundation series were some of them. I'm willing to give Asimov more points for his plots, tech and social theory than his dialogue. It can feel corny and awkward at times but you're always in for a good ride. I'll try to finish the series this summer--it's all the better the second time around.
