Solid start to a promising series, although the romance felt forced and dated.

Another great addition to the Foundation series. Prelude to Foundation was written in 1988, while the Foundation was written in 1951, so there is a significant amount of time between when the series started and when this book was published and it is clear that his ability to write and develop a plot really developed.

I know that there is a lot of debate about what reading order the foundation and Asimov books should be read in, but I have been reading the Foundation series in publication order. As the first in the preludes this was such a fun read because I knew where the story was going. I could get really invested because I had a hint or two about what was really happening, and it was still a surprise twist at the end. I think that it would be hard to read this novel, and then go all the way back to Foundation since the writing in this novel is so much more linear and clear. This entry into the series while still classically 'episodic' does not read like it is. His earlier work that was published for magazines as novellas then complied together will not read as smoothly as this.

All that said, I really enjoyed this book. It was great to get to see more of Seldon and how he came to be and what the guiding force was that drove him to develop psycho history. The writing was a lot cleaner, the characters were all well developed and the plot moved along a great pace, unlike some of his earlier writings that tended to drag.

Typical of 80s Asimov, it's pages and pages of nothing happening and then a thrilling and really fun finale. This one carries with it a vague, 1940s sexism that it seems Asimov couldn't shake even in his old age, though at least it does have a female lead. Would I recommend it? If you're a foundation fan, then yes! This should not be your first journey into the Foundation, though, even if it is technically the first book.

This is the first book by Isaac Asimov that I have read, and enjoyed it thoroughly. I can't wait to start reading another.

Crazy awesome beginning (and prequel) to an epic Sci-Fi world. The ending is incredible stuff.
