Its a murder mystery like no other with elements of a psychological thriller. The book does such an wonderful job of keeping us (its readers) hooked from the go to, even though we know exactly how and when the murder took place. Because we along with the detectives want to uncover how the different aspects of the story link, how the body was disposed and how the characters managed their alibis - a journey full of wonderful twists and turns, often leading into dead ends. Every time the detectives think they are going the right route they are in fact stirred away from uncovering the truth and that is a proof of how intelligent our murderer/accomplice is; always working with logic and a step ahead. But
Ishigami's
success is short lived when his brilliance is challenged by the genius of Detective Galileo.
I did not know how exactly the story would end but midway had an idea of what was happening due to its similarities to the Indian movie Drishyam. I eventually came to know that Drishyam, though not an adaptation, was heavily inspired by this book.
Absolutely enjoyed reading it!

*Heavy Sigh*
I can't wrap my head around the supposed brilliance of this book.
More like the police detective in this book is honestly proper clueless about apprehending criminals that don't leave clues of their guilt like bread crumbs for him to easily clue up on.
Honestly should have just written Yukawa in as the detective and saved readers the trouble.

SpoilerAlso can i just say fuck that Yasuko woman and her daughter.
Should have spoken up right from the start or just let Ishigami handle it. For that matter why tf did he even confess? Far as i could see all they had was conjecture, zero solid proof and even worse zilch evidence to actually pin either Yasuko or Ishigami.
So like why did everyone just decide to fuck themselves up like that?

Ugh!!! Really upset with the direction the author decided to take this book in.

❤❤
All in all, an okay enough crime novel but honestly way below what i was expecting considering all the praise this book has.

Totally random, but i wondered as i read this book, if it lost something of its magic with the translation to English.

I heard a lot about this writer and book since I live in Japan. I have been putting it of for a while now and finally decided to reluctantly read it as I don't read detective stories very often. So needless to say I didn't expect much. Not only did it surpass my expectation but I have to admin that it might be one of the most compelling detective stories I have ever read. It warms my heart when the "classic" lives up to it's reputation. Highly recommended, check out our discussion about it on episode 71 of the Mind Duck Books podcast: https://bit.ly/45f499C
