I loved this book. In addition to truly excellent workplace/enemies-to-lovers banter, it has great insights about grief and adulthood.

I loved the concept and, since I'm a great fan of the rivals to lovers trope, I had high expectations for this. Maybe that was the problem. It's a light, easy read but I would appreciate more bickering between the two main characters before they fell in love. I also felt like the characters weren't flashed out enough. The romance just didn't feel earned to me.

A cosy, fun and heartwarming rom-com I ate up in a single day. (Although, side-note, definitely contains more spice than I was expecting, so not entirely fluffy!)

The Ex Talk frames its enemies to lovers story with the backdrop of public radio studios, podcasting and journalism, which (for an avid podcast lover) was fascinating to read. The book starts a little slower than I would have liked, but really hits its stride about a 1/3 of the way in, when it moves more towards their romance and connection as friends.

Behind the love story, the book explores interesting perspectives on post-graduation loneliness, anxiety, workplace sexism, grief, culture, blended families and finding love after loss. The storyline following Shay’s mum and her partner was  beautiful and touching to read, whilst Shay and Dominic’s deep conversations in Orcas hold some of my favourite quotes.

Finally - Steve Rogers Goldstein, the furriest Avenger, who miraculously came into my life in the middle of a Marvel movie marathon, is an absolute VIP and favourite character of mine.

Such mixed thoughts on this one. Perhaps I'm just over the "enemies to lovers" trope, but I didn't really believe why Shay would feel such animosity towards Dominic (like, why is she so annoyed by his leaning, of all things?). But as their friendship developed, I enjoyed the story more. I liked that Shay started to question whether her current path in life was really right for her and worked to stand up for herself more. All in all, a solid, fun read.
