Did not care one bit about the characters or what happened to them. Extremely long and drawn out book.

I just didn't care about the characters in this one, and the jumping around in time didn't help. The audiobook was even worse - why have four narrators if you're going to divide them up into chapters? Listening to the female narrators trying to do tough guy voices was grating. No enthusiasm to finish it, I just lost interest. Disappointing because I enjoyed Dark Matter and Recursion.

Going into this I thought that I would really like this. By the blurb I was promised a disappearing town, which is a trope I enjoy. One summer r/no sleep went crazy for this trope and I read so many creepy pastas about disappearing towns. Plus, I really liked the other Blake crouch books that I’ve read (Recursion, dark matter, wayward pines, summer frost). But this was just not it. The characters motivations weren’t great. They say no bodies were found, but there was someone found in the snow. And all the bodies were in literally the most obvious place of all time. The writing was engaging enough to finish, hence the 2 stars but that was about it. The middle went on really long and didn’t develop the interesting parts and the end was rushed at breakneck speed. At one point I was hoping for wendigos, zombies, humanoid cave dwellers, something to happen but alas, no. It didn’t. There was nothing supernatural and it just turned into a survival story on a mountain.

This was more *traditional thriller* than the two more sci-fi-based plots of Crouch’s books I’ve read prior to this. ABANDON brings us an eerie, secluded setting made even more ominous by tense weather conditions, a fight for survival, plenty of gore + some elements of horror thrown in. Dual timelines switch between 1893, when the remote mining town is abandoned, and the present, in which the deserted town is being explored by a journalist + her team, over a century later. The plot was addictive, immersive + dark and kept me guessing throughout. If you liked THE DRIFT by CJ Tudor, you’ll probably like this too!

I lost a lot of sleep because of this book. It's a good thing I read it over a weekend. This chilling cat-and-mouse thriller gives new meaning to the phrase "history repeats itself". Abandon is a wild ride through the streets of an abandoned mining town and, once you start it, I dare you to put it down.
