Phenomenal piece of literature. I was astounded by how fantastic this was. I especially appreciated that it was very readable as an adult. I kinda wish I had read it as a child because I could see where I would have gotten different things out of it as a kid than as an adult. I'm so happy I decided to pick this up. Dark fairytales are for children too.

Excellent youth fiction book. We watched the His Dark Materials series on HBO, and I'm amazed, listening to the audio, how well the series stuck to the book. Cannot WAIT for season 3, so I'm listening to the books. The voices of the bears are AMAZING - all of the voice acting in the audiobooks is very good, actually. I had to slow down to 1.15x speed, instead of my usual 1.25x+ , because of the variation in accents.
I listened to the audio version-read by the author. It is done so well! Of course, there was a lot of controversy surrounding this book when it was initially made into a movie. As far as I can see at this point, the accusations that this book is "anti-God" are unfounded. The story is anti-Church though, as in a large controlling church somewhat like the medieval Catholic church. The author doesn't call it the Catholic church, and the whole thing is set in a parallel world where witches exist and people have companions named deamons--deamons are physical manifestations of a persons soul. I really enjoyed it, the whole story is enthralling.
More like 3.5 stars this time around.
I think that a grown man writing a little girls perspective seems skewed. I also think the explanation of dust should be clearer. They lost me at a certain point.

Great storytelling, I got pretty invested in the end, and I appreciated that when stakes went up it felt like the packng moved a little faster too. Even though it was younger fiction, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would

Lyra has moments where she can be annoying as the main character, but she's also a child.... and what child isn't annoying at some point? The beginning of the book was a bit slow and you get hit with a LOT of information pretty quickly.
Loved the narration of this book, each and every character had a different person reading for them and it was amazing and really lent itself to the richness of the world and characters.
