Early on I pencilled in Some Girls. My Life in a Harem for Brunei. I knew it wouldn’t give me an accurate depiction of the country (what single book does?) but there weren’t a lot of choices and I was curious about the realities of the harem life. By the time I came to read Brunei I knew I wanted (and had found) a more representative book but I still read this anyway. I found it to be a sad story of a young woman trying to find herself and the book’s only unique selling point - the so-called harem - comprised only half the book. The book dealt mostly in superficial generalities in terms of what went on - a lot of sitting around being bored, plenty of ostentatious items were gifted or purchased, spy cameras were everywhere and the ‘girls’ were often bitchy towards each other. She never dug deep into her motivations for her involvement either. The fact that members of Brunei’s royal family engaged in international sex trafficking certainly deserves attention. I’m just surprised a book about it was so boring.
