I should first mention I think the writer of this, Laini Taylor, is the coolest woman around. She has pink hair and a little girl named Clementine Pie. She's the first real person I've heard of who named their child Clementine since Matt and I decided if we have a girl we'll name her Clementine. So yes, Mz Taylor is amazing.
Very cute book. Slightly lower level than I thought it would be but still a really good book. Very quick read with great imagery. I love the crows. Strangely enough, this book actually connects with all the dystopian books I've been reading of late. The world is coming to an end, the faeries have lost their way and the humans kill everything. Magpie must save the world from the ultimate of evil creatures and start a new age for the world. A new age that will require more than one champion and hard work from everyone. Themes I'm very interested in at the moment.

If I were younger, I think I would have liked this book more. Perfect for younger readers, but it doesn't cross over really well for adults who read a wide range of fantasy.
what a fantastic story! very sweet. i would love to see studio ghibli make a movie of this.
So good. Laini Taylor's storytelling ability is amazing. She created a whole world here that I fell in love with. Can't wait to start Silksinger.
The first to go on my abandoned list. I just couldn't finish it. I liked the story that was being told, but not the writing. It was slooooow slow slow and I just don't have the patience for that. Maybe I will give it another shot one day. But nowadays I need a book to move a little faster.
Prepare to enter a very cool, original world. Humans are basically not even a part of the storyline (they exist, but only briefly arise and go away again), so we see everything from the Faeries' points of view. The main characters are fun and witty; there are all sorts of Fae creatures involved, and animals that talk, specifically birds.
The bad guys, or Djinn, are interesting creatures, and the magic used to (try to) defeat them is very cool. I've never read anything like it.
The plot flowed, the characters were developed, humor was in all the right places, the danger was severe enough that it kept your on your toes (or rather, kept you turning pages)...
It's a really fun read, and I can't wait to read the next one.
Also, note: The audiobook is read by Davina Porter on Audible, and she does a fantastic job! You really get sucked into Laini Taylor's world.

This book was a childhood/teen favorite of mine, and one I’d already read two or three times— but this was my first time reading it again in probably 10 years, and as an adult. I’m so glad it holds up. The adventure and foreboding mystery gripped me just as much it did back then, and if that’s not magic, I don’t know what is.

This was amazing. I resisted reading it for a long time because fairies seem very twee. But it was NOT twee at all. The fairies were cool, rather than precious, and the villains were scary.
