I always love when a book teaches me about history through the lense of fictional characters, spanning the course of their lives. but more than that I love when authors can write them in a way that feels like they are writing from memory, like it's actually their experience.

I literally have nothing but good things to say about this book. It is so so powerful and the fact that the author wrote it during the pandemic when all the Asian hate crime was rampant makes this even more powerful to me. she really showed us how so little has changed in america.

the writing is phenomenal. so full of depth and meaning. not a single paragraph wasted. and the incorporation of calligraphy and chinese words to tell the story? I can't praise it enough. absolutely obsessed.

when Lin Daiyu said at the end "you will never forget me." yes!!! I think she'll live inside me forever (iykyk 👀). I really need everyone to read it, but please check tws first!

I decided not to finish this one. The beginning of the book was well written and intriguing, but the portions surrounding the brothel were too much for me to read at this time.

I loved this book.  I knew a little of the information regarding girls kidnapped from China and brought to the brothels of San Francisco, but this taught me so much more.  What I didn't realize was how many Chinese came to Idaho in the late 1800s.  The second half of the book takes place in Pierce, Idaho (where my own great-grandfather, grandfather, and grandmother homesteaded starting in 1917.)

The author wove together the story of Daiyu and calligraphy (the four treasures).  While this book would probably be a good listen, you would miss something by not being able to see the Chinese characters as the author describes their meaning.

This book will break your heart and stay with you after you finish reading it.

This is a book set in late 1800s China and America. It is set during the Chinese Exclusion Act and follows the story of Daiyu who is forcefully immigrated to the USA. The story is at times difficult and at others hopeful. it mingles with folklore from China.
