Si tratta del terzo libro della serie. La scrittrice รจ molto brava, crea personaggi diversi tra loro e ha un tocco anche ironico. Si tratta di un giallo. Ormai mi sono affezionata ai personaggi.
In Cruelest Month, Penny manages what I think is an incredibly rare thing: she makes us care deeply about the arc plot even more than the current mystery. Yes, we want to know who the killer is and why, but we're more invested in seeing Gamache emerge victorious. Maybe part of that is the time in which I'm reading it, but a lot of the power is in the characters themselves. I really, really liked this one!
I accidentally read #6 in the Gamache series first and liked it so well that I went back to read the series from the beginning. I enjoyed the first and second entries, but this one was even better.
I like that our author kept me guessing until the end, and her red herrings were well done. I also like how she wove together the main mystery at Three Pines with the mystery of who in the police department is trying to shake up Gamache by spreading rumors first about him, and then about his family. The characters in Three Pines get really fleshed out over the course of multiple books, and that is a pleasure as well.

Inspector Gamache and the sleepy-yet-murdery village setting continue to charm, and the progression of the police scandal that Gamache was embroiled in prior to the series start made for a nice plot foil. But the central murder was less compelling than the past two, and the new character additions less lovable than those mainstays who were pushed to the margins. Not my favorite, but still a fun series that blends eccentric humor and village cozy with the twists and thrills.
Ridiculously good. But don't start reading the Inspector Gamache novels with this one! Start at the first book, Still Life. There are threads in the first three novels that for the most part get tied up in this, the third one. The final 20 or so pages of The Cruelest Month are among the most nail-biting and heartbreaking I have ever read. Penny is a master, and for my money the current Queen of the genre.
No ma'am. Not today and not with me.
This book was filled with rage and hatred for all the characters and nothing good ever seemed to happen. It was a cacophony of misogyny and sneering and animal harm in great big buckets. No. I do not want this. Like at all.
Maybe this is a decent book and it just reached me at the exact wrong time, but trying to look at it objectively, I didn't buy the murderer, the red herrings, the coincidences and the big plot twist where one character

Previously on Goodreads, my review for book 2
I think this is my favorite in the series, so far.
Ruth got her duck. Mom is so happy I've made it to the duck.
To me, this story is about transformation, how it can be brought about by love, jealousy, betrayal, illness, or just being in the right place at the right time.
I enjoy watching this town and its residents, the petty little squabbles, the festering secrets, the togetherness they have. I know small town life and while it's not quite like this, typically, I can feel how this particular dynamic was created and how it sustains itself.
I was surprised to find Gamache's storyline going as far as it did. I don't know if it is resolved, for this portion, at least, or not but I didn't expect it to go so far in one book. There's a Sherlock Holmes/Moriarty thing going on, though Gamache is much less asshole-ish or drug addicted than Holmes.
I had the killer wrong this time. I had everything else right but chose the wrong person. This is why I am a librarian and not a detective. My solve rate would be super low.
