The weird double climax at the ending where the two plots converged felt forced.
The Chief Inspector Gamache storyline: 4.5 stars (holy moly!!!)
The seance murder storyline: 2.5 stars. I couldn’t get into it and didn’t find it convincing. Plus minor plot holes were bothering me.
Also - what is with the Three Pines residents and getting angry about killing anything in nature?! Gilles’ rants about how logging is tree murder reminded me of the first book (Still Life) rants about how all hunting is murder. Is Louise Penny vegan? Does she want us all to stop farming and hunting? What is the point of putting characters with such extreme black&white views into books? Especially when they have absolutely no connection to the plot???? Real life is much more nuanced, and including nuance in feelings/behavior makes your characters more believable. I feel like this is part of what makes the Three Pines cast seem ‘caricatured’.
I really enjoyed how the stories were woven together though. Louise Penny’s style is different and hard to follow at times, but makes for an interesting read and stretches my mind.
