Backman's ability to examine the human condition is just superb. I love how he zooms in on a character,.then zooms out on the broader story and then zooms in on another character. He simulateously makes you be so angry at a character and feel so much empathy for them.

“Younger brothers never know what they put their big sisters through.  Anxiety hidden behind eyed, words hidden behind other words, keys to gun cabinets hidden under pillows at night “

As I become more and more obsessed with F1 - the most elitist sport besides maybe polo? - Fredrik Backman comes around and smack me on the head to remind me that the only sports worth supporting are the ones that belong to the people #ThankYouComrade.
Picking up a few months after the climactic, trigger-happy ending of Book 1, Us Against You throws us back into the lives of this small town hockey-team, their mothers and sisters, and the politicians and neighborhood gangs that pin their hopes of survival to the team’s success.

We Stand Tall If You Stand Tall

The closest I can come to explaining how reading this series makes me feel is to compare it to the ‘Midnights’ release day. Clearing my morning, closing my eyes, pressing play and readying my heart to be emotionally dropkicked by Taylor Swift every 5 minutes until I’m convinced I’m just a series of heartbreaks and drunk decisions tied together by nostalgia.

Read If:
– You’ve lost a best friend because you did some stupid shit
– You remember the media hype, and subsequent backlash, against Michael Sam (first openly gay NFL draft pick)
– At some point you’ve been the glue holding your parents’ marriage together

overall, i enjoyed this. i love Backman's writing and the Beartown characters are very 3 dimensional and loveable. i did not enjoy how we were introduced to a bunch of new characters and how the plot became so political. despite this, Backman never disappoints me with his strong characters that make me feel so deeply for them.

A good follow up to Beartown, but nothing could ever beat the first book. I still loved this book and being able to follow the same characters throughout their lives. The end with Peter made me chuckle because what makes him think he is qualified?
