Positives. This book is really charming and great if you need a light, comforting read. The premise is original, the characters funny and the ending unequivocally happy. Furthermore, the way grief is portrayed is beautiful and well-written.

Negatives. The author really tries to give the characters interesting and grounded personalities as this allows you to empathize more with them. However, where she fails -I think- is in translating personality into action. We are told over and over again how certain characters should be but their actions (while oftentimes in line with their personality) are understated and disproportionate to the circumstances they find themselves in.

🐦‍⬛ After a debut novel that did not sell, Florence Day starts ghostwriting for a famous romance author. After a horrible breakup, she struggles to complete the last manuscript of her contract. Furthermore, her new, attractive editor, Ben refuses to extend her deadline. A tragedy takes her back home where she suddenly sees the ghost Ben. Flirty feelings unfurl and Florence revisits the town she once ran away from.

🐦‍⬛ This was such a perfect read - captivating and beautiful. It is funny, sweet, sad and happy! Florence is lovable and relatable; the perfect main character. Her story hides behind a romance. It is about Florence rediscovering herself and the character development shows. The twist brought surprise and excitement!

🐦‍⬛ The romance between her and the ghost of Ben is pure and magical . But what I love most is Florence's journey of self re-discovery and closure. There is so much heartbreak but the supporting characters anchor Florence and bring additional joy.

This is the first book I've ever read that deals with parent loss in a way that I found real/relatable. The book isn't really even about that, but I laughed and I cried and I loved it.

My summary: Florence is the ghostwriter for a popular romance novelist and she’s on a deadline for her newest book. The problem is that she no longer believes in love and can’t finish her manuscript with a happy ending. Her new editor won’t give her another extension, leaving her in a predicament that no longer is very important once she receives the news that her father has died. After having left her hometown for being ostracized for her ability to see and talk with ghosts, this will be her first trip back since leaving. To her surprise, the ghost that appears on her doorstep is not her father—it’s her new editor. As she grapples with regrets and what is really important in life, this unexpected ghost may just convince her that love can exist.
My thoughts: Overall, I liked it. It was cute but also pretty slow. I thought it touched on some difficult topics really well: grief, love, loss, infidelity, broken trust, self-confidence, being unique, family drama, self-fulfillment. My initial reaction to the paranormal/ghost element was annoyance but it actually all pulled together well. I enjoyed the narrator and thought she did a great job with it. I do feel like I lost some bits of the story as it went along because I’m terrible with focusing on audiobooks, so I may ultimately read this one as well.
