For a conclusion of one story, it wasn't all that great. I expected more. It was just all over the place. Upside, I am curious for the rest of the Novak's stories and especially for Kiev's. But I need to take a break from the world of the Shade and read some other books

i’ve read the first 7 books, and by far this one was the worst. i don’t know if that means anything because all of them so far are terrible and total train wrecks. absolute cringe plots and horrid writing. i wanted to read all of these to build my own self-confidence but in good conscience for my own brain i don’t know if i can subject myself anymore.

A Break of Day
By Bella Forrest
A Shade of Vampire #7

This was supposed to be the finale for the series. This book did answer all unanswered questions and wrap most everything up so if you wanted to quit reading the series, you could but there are a lot more books in the series.

In the last book, Sofia had given birth to her twins but Kiev had stolen the boy, Ben and nobody knows where he took the baby.

In this book, Sofia wakes up as a vampire. Wait! What? I thought the whole idea of her being an Immune was that she was immune to becoming a vampire. I was confused but I guess when Immunes are taken to Cruor, the realm of the evil invisible vampires called the Elders, their immune system breaks down which allows them to become vampires. This twist bugged me but it is what it is. The author can do whatever she pleases. It doesn’t mean I have to like it though.

An Elder possesses Sofia and she runs around causing problems. She shows up in Costa Rica where Derek has their baby girl, Rose. She is acting weird and saying things that don’t make sense but Derek doesn’t even notice. I started calling her Elfia because she was a mix between an elder and herself.

The Elders have taken of the Shade and have possessed a lot of the vampires on the Shade. Elders don’t have bodies so they have to possess someone to do their evil deeds.

This book was really confusing because the author was purposely holding back information. I hate that but everything was explained in the end.

The series continues after this book but there is a three book spin-off series called A Shade of Kiev that I have to read. Out of all the characters in this series, Kiev is the one who intrigued me the most. Even if I don’t read any more of this series, I have to read the three about Kiev.

I was kind of frustrated with this one for a few reasons. The biggest one being that nobody could tell that something was wrong with Sophia when she shows back up. I don't understand that at all because the way she was acting was so completely out of character...even if she had been turned into a vampire.

So we begin with Sophia. I'm not really sure why, but she seems to have lost her memory. She didn't even know her real name apparently. She does get flashes of Derek (though she doesn't know who he is) but she keeps that a secret because she simply feels she has to. It doesn't take long for her to break out of whatever vampire spell she was under though. Unfortunately, she ends up becoming a vessel for one of the originals. And while he's inside of her body he forces her to do and say terrible things. All while she suffers inside of her own head.

Derek has been going mad with the loss of Sophia and his son. He rightfully doesn't trust the witches, but he doesn't know what to do. He knows he can't stay hiding though and eventually goes to hunter headquarters and try to help plan things out. Things do not go his way. The head hawk dude (can't remember his name) is calling in his marker and taking Sophia's dad back to his realm, he has no idea where his wife or child could even be, and his kingdom has been overtaken by seemingly invincible evil creatures. What's a now human to do?

You'd think that things would look up when Sophia comes back to him, but the one possessing her has his own agenda and easily does what he wants with her body. But it's his actions that lead us to finding out a whole bunch of things...including where her son might be.

I was honestly not impressed with how everything went down at the end and how this battle of a sorts was won. It just seemed way too easy. I do appreciate how not everybody makes it out alive though because realistically that wouldn't happen. The thing with Sophia's dad also didn't make a whole lot of sense to me and it didn't add anything to the story, especially with where he ends up anyway. One thing that I don't think I'll ever get is how Derek and Sophia are considered the king and queen of The Shade when they're human. Am I really supposed to think that powerful vampires are totally cool with this?

I was originally planning to jump right into the Kiev books and continue on some from there, but I need a break. This was not as amazing as I was hoping for/expecting. And honestly, I'm in dire need of some serious alpha aliens right now.

Woah! I was expecting a twist with the ending of the last one, this one has just as many! This one blues more lines of who is an ally to Derek or Sophia (and then you get to question if they are each others...) and who wants them all destroyed. I liked how they ended the arc but it was almost too happy all things considered what goes done. Too perfect and therefore unrealistic. The biggest surprise was Kiev and it has me eager to read his tale. ANd I must say I hate Arron as much as the elders I think!

Oh my gosh. It's so bad. Why do people like this series? My head hurt from rolling my eyes so much throughout this book. The writing is so juvenile. Also, could it have been tied up in a prettier bow?! Dear Lord. It was like the author pulled what she liked out of the Twilight series and then added even more fluffy nonsense and rainbows. It felt like it was written by a 17 year old in the throws of first love.

I'm so glad to be finished with this series. Twilight is an upgrade from this and at least more original. Ugh, I feel like I need to read some Jane Austen to cleanse my brain of this.

The final installment specifically for Derek and Sofia. Love how things come together and they are able to save the day once again, reuniting their family in the process. More than once, everything seems impossible given the forces they are up against and it is amazing how Bella Forrest can create opponents that are constantly evolving while making you question which side their motives place them on. I'm excited to see the next chapter for The Shade.

Book 7 finished the arc of Derek and Sofia’s story. Overall, I did really enjoy it. Definitely some interesting characters with the addition of the Elders, Witches, and Guardians. I’m taking a break from the series now but do plan to continue onto book 8 in the future. This is a good vampire series and I would recommend it.
