when i started this book, i wasn’t sure it would live up to its name, but it absolutely did. the writing is at turns lyrical and beautiful and at other times blunt and unyielding in its descriptions. i look that there were no perfect characters in this story, but plenty of people that try, fail sometimes, but grow and try to do better. a great read on forgiveness, compassion, and finding strength in yourself and others.

Wow, this book was a lot- beautiful, heartbreaking, enraging, sad, hopeful... I read a few reviews with references to content warnings before I read this and I am glad that I did, it is very heavy, but I felt better going into it prepared. It still ripped my heart out. I listened to the audiobook and this is one of the few books where I actually just laid down and listened during a lot of it.

The book has 3 perspectives and jumps back and forth in time where one character is giving background, this format has often not worked well for me but it absolutely did work here and I found myself caring deeply about each POV and feeling like I was never ready to leave their part when it switched. I also think this was strengthened by the audiobook having 3 voices for the different characters, each one really brought them to life. And the author really brings real life situations to these characters, it's a lot, but it's happening every day in this racist capitalist hellscape. This book covers so much and does so with care, complexity, and nuance it deserves. It's heavy, but so loving and hopeful at the same time. (Literally got teary just writing this review)

One small thing I really loved, there are music references throughout and every one of them made me smile. Also, loved the book mentions. I know I listen to a lot of music and read a lot, but I was wondering how I got every reference so I looked up the author's age after finishing the book and she was born in the same year as me, no idea if that's why or we just have similar taste :)

CW: islamophobia, racism, sexual assault (off page/referenced), PTSD, death of parent, death, drug abuse/overdose, terminal illness, child/domestic abuse, anxiety/panic attacks, trauma

I put off reading this book for a while because I felt like it wasn't the right time for me to do so. Recently, I had decided to and I couldn't be more grateful to have read this during such a hard period of my life. Salahudin's story was a bit too familiar from the start with him having a parent who is in need of dialysis in order to survive and a parent who's an addict. My father happens to be both. When he said, "I hate the fact that I have to do it. Hate that it's me taking care of him, instead of him making sure that I'm all right.", I had to take a minute to process because it felt like a part of me had become a part of the book. The more I got into his story, the more I felt seen and heard with all my rage. Originally, when Noor kept repeating the story about her uncle saving her from the rubble in Pakistan, I was confused because I didn't understand why it was being repeated. Until, I got to that gut wrenching scene and I sobbed. It was so unbearable, I had to take a break from reading. Overall, this book was truly an eye opening experience into understanding what it's like to be an immigrant in the USA, while also dealing with the problems that they may face behind closed doors. HIGHLY RECOMMEND EVERYONE TO READ THIS ASAP!!!!!!!!!

LOVE the writing! It was so well-written, all the pieces of the puzzle were addressed/connected.
