It's rough trying to write a review of a book when the tears are still coming strong. I've never read a book that understands religion in the exact same way I do. I feel like this book saw my soul. I've been trying to articulate it my whole life, and it turns out a woman I've never met, who was born in a country I will probably never visit, knows the things I do. This book is human on a level I didn't know a book could be. I've been wandering through life with the thought that this story might exist, and it is a joy to have found it.

More adolescent than I was expecting, and I wasn't really in the mood for high school vibes. Also felt a bit like a trauma deluge of just every horrible possible thing happening. I realize that can be realistic, but I don't feel like there was a great throughline or commentary on it.

I appreciate that they found a tempered way to reach a happy ending...'happy ending, where it was sort of sucky but ultimately turned out okay', but it added to the ultimately adolescent vibe for me.

I have a lot to say about this book. I will try to keep this review as spoiler free as possible.
Enjoyment Rating(How much I enjoyed the book): 2/5     Overall Rating:3.5/5
(My rating system is weird)

Why I gave the book a 2/5 Enjoyment Rating:
On the back of the book some author from a book I do not remember had said that they read the book in one day. I on the other hand had took at least 5 days to read it, usually I can finish a book of that length in 2-3. That reason is mostly because the book was so very slow moving. It took about 250 pages for the plot to actually hit, and there was hardly any action between the beginning and the plot twist. I enjoy fast paced books and I wasn't aware of the fact that this book was a slow moving one, but I wanted to see why so many people gave it a high rating.

Other ratings for things in the book:
(I take into account my enjoyment rate plus characters and story line development)
I enjoyed the plot twist very much but I didn't enjoy the time jump at the end, Plot Twist: 4/5
My favorite character is Noor, I appreciated how she expressed herself with her choice of music and never let her uncle stop her from believing in Islam. I loved that this book included people who believe in the Islamic faith because I feel that not enough books have characters that believe in Islam. All the characters seemed to be fighting their own battles with themselves. For example, Art, we never really found out why he dealt. Jamie, she obviously had some sort of internal issues to the point where she harassed Noor. In total characters get a 5/5.

Why I didn't like the book as much as I thought I would:
Slow moving
Took me ages to get into it, probably because of my reading taste
I thought it had a romantic subplot, it did kind of, but at the same time didn't

To say the least I feel conflicted. While reading the book I enjoyed it, but looking back on it I don't think I'd recommend it.

This book is kind of like if A Little Life was a young adult novel. For like 85% of the book everything that can possibly go wrong does, and everyone is miserable. But it’s YA so in the end stuff kind of works out. But geez reading this felt like being punched in the gut repeatedly.

At least these kids end up getting therapy eventually because lord knows they need it.
