I'm doing a reread of this series, and this is one I apparently hadn't read yet. I checked the Must Love Hellhounds anthology with authors Ilona Andrews, Charlaine Harris, Nalini Singh, and Meljean Brook from my local library (ebook version). I can't believe I missed the budding romance during my previous read. I love how this series pulls from mythology and I'm always surprised with how the story progresses working that in. Great read, also very sad.

This was a nice little filler story, I'm guessing none of it was completely necessary for the reading but just gives you a nice bonus insight into the world. I love Andrea think she is a great addition and just as kick ass as Kate. It had a couple of nice little revelations at the end that make you go ohhhh.

I really liked Andrea as a side character, but she almost lacks self-respect to cut it as a protagonist. A thoroughly entertaining novel (as always) I was happy to have read this novella.

How supernatural warriors are ignorant enough to not even know basic mythology (Cerberus, the three-headed dog of Hades), well that pissed me off. And made me realize I’m team Kate Daniels or no one.

Furthermore, the blatant throwing herself at Raphael almost was so cringey. Maybe that’s to do with only ever seeing Andrea as a side character before this but my god, it didn’t make me like her any more!

Overall, glad I read it but it definitely wasn’t necessary.

Magic Mourns takes place in the interlude between Magic Strikes and Magic Bleeds. Kate is recuperating from having taken a sword to the gut and her best friend Andrea Nash is filling in for her at the Order of Merciful Aid.

This is the story of how Andrea and Raphael finally get together while solving a mystery that involves Hades, his faithful companion Cerberus, a terminally ill Master of the Dead, the apples of immortality and the Angel of Death (also known as Teddy Jo).

Magic Mourns delivers the expected blend of action, mystery, romance, humor and witty dialogue. I like Andrea, but I miss Kate. Andrea isn't nearly as snarky or as much of a badass - but she does get points for going back and killing everyone in her old pack who abused her and her mother when she was a child. And of course there is no denying that Boom baby is pretty cool. Raphael is just a sweet guy, even when he's in beast warrior form or talking about the time he had to wash cold K-Y jelly with a funky smell out of his hair.

It isn't necessary to read this novella to follow the Magic series but it does contain a bit of foreshadowing towards the very end related to the nature of both Kate and Curran's magical abilities. Overall it's a fun short story and worth reading if you're a fan and want to get the full impact of the Magic series.

While this isn't my favorite of her short stories, I'm glad we got to see some more background to Andrea & Raphael's relationship outside of Gunmetal Magic. They're a great pair and so steamy. I also loved finally getting some background on Teddy Jo! He's one of my favorite underrated characters in this series, and it was hilarious to see that final interaction between him and Kate. Definitely worth the read.
