It reminded me in many ways of Black Beauty, which I absolutely adored. It shows the kindness, cruelty, and ineptitude of people from the animal's perspective. It makes you feel so strongly while reading, about both good and bad characters.
While Black Beauty eventually found love in a peaceful home, Buck takes the opposite approach and fully embraces his wild dog side. Both end up in their happiest state, and both books really make you feel and root for each animal. This one feels like more of a product of its time than Black Beauty, but I still enjoyed it.
