Set in the horse show world, this novel about mean girls, secrets, romance, and murder the common thread is drama. The Parkers are moving from Texas to California. Heather, mother to two daughters, is desperate for her daughters to ride horses. Soon the family is enmeshed in that world.

Eliza Jane Brazier organizes the book well telling the story from multiple points of view, including the detective’s. The individual chapters and perspectives lead up to revealing the victim and the murderer.

I read to find out who made it out alive and how the issues were resolved. This was fine. Probably just not the book for me.

I am not a horse person and rarely do I enjoy books with unlikeable characters, so I shockingly loved and could put down Girls and Their Horses. Perhaps it was the structure of knowing at the outset that a crime occurred, but not knowing the victim or the perpetrator. Over the course of the novel, in addition to becoming immersed in the wealthy world of horse jumping, the reader tries to figure out who did it and who is victimized. Read if you enjoy: horses, mean girls, secrets being revealed, unlikeable characters

I thought this was just another horse girl book.  I was very mistaken.  The horse barn was just the setting that this book uses to look at a broken family and their attempts to mend the broken parts of themselves.  This is a great mystery as a murder investigation is running alongside flashbacks to provide the backstory.
