This was an interesting prequel to The Hunger Games, I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this, I knew it was about Snow so maybe a villain origin story? But that wasn't quite what we got here, Snow is a character that is at times sympathetic, with moments of likability, but he is constantly drawn back to the views of the Capitol and goes willingly. He has choices, and time and time again he makes the selfish, self-serving choices, believing he is better than those in the districts, more worthy and that the world owes him. It certainly explains how Snow became to be the character we know from the original trilogy.

I felt the last half of the book dragged though, the pacing felt slow and it lacked a bit of direction. I'm not too sure what this book adds to the Hunger Games universe apart from explaining the early development of the Hunger Games and that Snow was born that way and only got worse over time. Unlike the other books, I don't think I'll be re-reading this one.

Okay entertaining for sure and loved the backstory of the development of the games, the Capitol, and Snow but damnnnn my overall feeling is F U CORIOLANUS SNOW. the fact that Suzanne could keep me so engaged in a story about a dude who absolutely sucks is such a testament to her abilities as an author.

CONTAINS SPOILERS
I’m happy that we as the reader got to see how Snow was made into the person he was in the Hunger Games trilogy.

I liked seeing a young Tigress as well, and their close relationship - we never do get to see how that deteriorated but I guess that’s implied by him becoming president in the trilogy.

I thought his ruthlessness was always there in this book, every time he had a reaction to something his first thought was how could he spin it for Snow to land on top and in the end he got what he wanted.

My interpretation is - Sejanus Plinth was such an interesting character because he as well as Snow had a lot of depth in their characters but I think Sejanus purpose was served as Snow’s moral compass and then Lucy gray did as well because they were truly good people and even Snow knew he wasn’t.

When he got Sejanus killed that was him basically killing the innocent part of himself and then killing or what we the reader assumed killing Lucy Gray was the last straw and paved the way for Snow to become Dr.Gauls apprentice like she always wanted.

This book had such interesting characters, the plot I thought was strong, the setting, seeing how the Hunger Games were before all the glitz and glam of what the capital will become - Suzanne Collins is a mastermind in foreshadowing and making a prequel actually good ( I sometimes think they’re not necessary)

The only thing that I wish we had got to see was closure for Lucy Gray. We didn’t get to see the Covey again ( especially Maude Ivory) and we didn’t get any funeral or ‘after’ Lucy Gray was gone. Otherwise I absolutely loved this book.

girl i’m gagged. loved.
