This is an out of the box cozy mystery. I can see it having mass appeal if that's what you are into.
This is one of those stories which is a small-town home coming. The protagonist has lost her mother and returned home to take over the family coffee shop. She finds one of her elderly neighbours dead in suspicious circumstances, and builds back up a friendship that she had with a his son, who was the boy next door when she was a kid.

I was seriously irritated with the guy who insists on buying things every time they go out to share a meal. He seems to think it's some kind of game, but the fragile masculinity bothers me. I guess it's all part of the whole cozy aesthetic to pine for "simpler times", but it doesn't need to be socially regressive, surely?

The grounding of having home-town roots, and having to be the one in charge of sorting out grandparent and parent belongings after their passing, is definitely relatable and speaks to my bones.

I do like the whole wakeup call of amateur sleuth having to face up to the unforeseen consequences of presuming that people might be guilty of something when they have no proof.. even more devastating if that sort of thing is spread around the rumour mill in a small town. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Is it just me? but I can't say that I understand the mentality of someone who wants a pet, but doesn't know if they want a dog or a cat.

The book was .. ok enough.
