About a chapter in I realized I read this book a long time ago. I felt then the cruelty of the hunt and couldn’t understand the idea of loving one animal and disliking another. With age and experience I realize that this was another time and place, and killing is easier when you are hungry and poor. One thing that struck me as hypocrisy was when a bobcat was described as a “vicious predatory animal” as an excuse to get “rid” of it. As if humans are not also vicious predatory animals??

My fifth grade teacher made us read this and I remember having to go sit in the hallway and cry because it was so heartbreaking. It did have the same effect now - dogs are just too good for this world!!! Amazing book. So sad

Many years ago, my fifth grade teacher read this book to my class. It ripped my heart out and trampled on it (I'm an overly sensitive sort--the kind who cries over sappy commercials). I bawled like a baby. The next year my sixth grade teacher made us watch the movie--and again I cried my eyes out.
That being said, this is a gripping, emotional and well written book.
It's just not one I'll voluntarily reread anytime soon.

A beautifully written novel about the death of pets, yet again, but it broke my heart. If you need a good heart wrenching novel then this is the one.

A beautiful, heartbreaking masterpiece that I shall cherish (from afar). I genuinely don't think my heart could handle a re-read. I know I'd be a complete emotional mess.
A moving story of a boy and his two coonhounds. Easy to read and fall in love with. One of my favourites that I read as a kid.
