This is the first book in a while that made me SOB at the end. What a journey Elsa had. Really requires some introspection on the privileges we’re afforded in this day and age. I was very disappointed by
the discrimination and maltreatment from CA Central Valley locals toward any newcomers and ‘outsiders’. What a poor representation of the area where I grew up. Elsa and her kids’ perseverance in the face of the worst of humanity is heart wrenching in the best way.

This book destroyed me.

It was hard AF to read at times.

Kristin Hannah is an absolute writing genius.

Read this book now.

This is now my 2nd favorite book of all. The heroine, Elsa, is my hero. This book made me cry throughout the reading journey and I sobbed in the end. Elsa is the mother of all mothers. No one can ever compare to her generosity, kindness, braveness and strength. I have learned so much from her. The mic has been dropped.

Having trouble deciding if it’s a 3 or a 4 so we will settle on a 3.5. I found Elsa to be a pretty flat character. I did enjoy Loretta’s character development. I think the fact that Elsa died was a positive to the book, not in the sense that i didn’t like her character but in the sense that I didn’t think the author would have done it. I think it could’ve been shortened overall.

A really interesting, but very depressing, look at the dust bowl and life during the great depression as well as how the US citizen migrant workers were treated. An especially relevant read for current times. I wish I could say I loved this book but the story was just too sad and I felt like the ending was very unsatisfactory.
