Man, I almost didn’t make it through this one - the second quarter of the book really dragged for me. But halfway through? Once the story finished setting up, it never stopped and only kept ramping up. Why are these books so LONG?! Frustratingly amazing read.
ETA: The longer I sit with this book, the more I love and appreciate everything about it. This may actually be one of my favorite books. 5 Stars ⭐️

Even better the second time around! Kaladin and Adolin my be my favorites, but Shallan was the MVP this time. She's so much more interesting on a second run through. This book is my favorite.
The trio coming together, The Duel, I Am A Stick, Renarin training with his plate, meeting Zahael... But what was Jasnah doing the whole time in Shadesmar? When did Zahael get here and where did he lose Nightblood? How did Nin/Nale get Nightblood?
IT'S ALL SO GOOD.

Definitely better than the first book! If you finished Way of Kings and were for some reason unsure about reading on, I'd say go for it. Having established the characters and the conflict aready, this book just really takes off.
This has what you expect and want from Sanderson - a creative world with an amazing magic system. The characters definitely gain the depth they were lacking in this book, as well. My main concern that keeps me from really loving this series completely is that Sanderson seems to be handling a very messy racism metaphor, and I'm not sure how well he's pulling it off. But if I don't think too much while reading, there's not much wrong with the book.
