"Of course there must be lots of magic in the world," he said wisely one day, "but people don't know what it is like or how to make it. Perhaps the beginning is just to say nice things are going to happen until you make them happen. I am going to try and experiment!"

Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Audio for an audio ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The Secret Garden follows a newly orphaned girl named Mary, who moves in with her rather deadbeat uncle in his manor. Amidst wallowing in her anger and loneliness, Mary discovers a secret garden, a secret cousin, and new friends in all shapes and sizes.

Glenda Jackson is an award winner for a reason, and has done such a lovely job narrating this title! I found absolutely no issues focusing on this book at all times of day or night. The audiobook features sound effects and music that truly add to the magical atmosphere of this classic.

I've been meaning to read The Secret Garden since I was eight and my grandmother surprised me with a copy and matching necklace. Now, at twenty-five, I'm still so glad that I finally did! This is a recommended read for anyone who enjoys classics, wonderful narrators, and a cute story of two children learning how to live life to the fullest and find happiness after tragedy.

Another many-times-reread childhood fave. She was a nice contrast to Anne of Green Gables, who sometimes seemed too sickly sweet and perfect compared to my snarky self.

This book has been a favourite of mine since I was a child. I love the character development and the hopeful outlook of this novel. You have to adore the way the Yorkshire accents are written as well. This novel is a lovely reminder about being mindful and enjoying lifes simple pleasures.

I enjoyed the characters and the setting. However, the book seemed to be a bit lacking in conflict. Of course, the internal growth of the characters was the focus, but there rarely seemed to be anything that challenged their growth. The stakes seemed too low.

Reread as an adult for a bit of nostalgia and it is still such a good read . Sometimes you cannot beat the classics and the warmth they bring your soul.

I enjoyed this book almost as much as I remember enjoying at as a child which was not as true with [b:A Little Princess|3008|A Little Princess|Frances Hodgson Burnett|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1327868556l/3008._SY75_.jpg|1313599]. I enjoy the beginning of each of the books less than the second half. I did not enjoy how unpleasant the descriptions of almost all things were at the start of the book but I guess that is necessary to show the dramatic change that happens in Mary and Colin by the end. It was a challenge to read the Yorkshire accents out loud. I am just glad no one heard me but my daughter. I do think that the book being written to reflect the Yorkshire dialect gave it a stronger sense of place. I am finding that descriptions of nature like in this book as well as The Hatchet are calming and enjoyable to read aloud at the close of the day.

I adored this book! I had seen one of the movies as a child, but never read the book until now. What a optimistic, magical, lovely read. 4.8 stars
