The world is lucky that I didn't read this when I was younger. I would have made this book my entire personality. But, like, who could blame hypothetical-younger-me?

Radio Silence certainly has its faults, there are some details that don't quite add up, some elements that straight-up confused me and, to be honest, the pacing was sometimes too rushed. However, all of that doesn't seem to matter in the Grand Scheme of Things because Oseman managed to create such a dense and captivating atmosphere that I drowned in teenage-uncertainty/anxiety/helplessness in the best way possible.

There's just something in the way that Oseman writes; stringing words together that convey a dissonance between the steadfastness of what is being said and the wobbly ground of angst. It is perfect for a teenage perspective. Which is my roundabout way of saying: the vibes were impeccable.

Loved the characters, too.

I can only recommend this book. It was so gripping, so easy to read. I was so engrossed I didn't even realize that I spent the last hour reading (I swear the clock just skipped 10pm altogether and went straight from 9 to 11).

Oh, wederom verliefd op een Oseman! 

Radiosilence dateert al van 2017 maar de vertaling verschijnt nu pas. Dit is Osemans 2de boek, geschreven toen die nog studeerde; wat een talent! 

 

In Radiostilte maken we kennis met Frances, die naast heel hard studeren, om op Cambridge toegelaten te worden, maar één passie heeft: Universe City. Wanneer ze tot haar verbazing ontdekt dat die podcast door haar overbuurjongen Aled wordt gemaakt verandert haar leven helemaal… 

 

Over de plot wil ik niet te veel vertellen, laat je vooral zelf overrompelen, op een goede manier. Oseman ken je natuurlijk van de Heartstopper-serie, haar romans zijn donkerder van toon maar voelen toch hartverwarmend licht aan. Radiostilte ook: het is een boek dat naar de keel en naar je hart grijpt. Met personages die herkenbaar zijn, waar je vrienden mee wil worden en op wie je wil lijken. En wiens kleerkast én haarkleur je wil hebben!!! Of je nu 15 of 45 bent (zoals ik). 

 

Een ideaal boek om tijdens de Pride Month te lezen; en ik duim op een verfilming van deze parel!

I really love how real this story feels.
Alice Oseman writes teenagers so well, it feels like she truly understands how we behave and what we feel.
This book portrays what we all go trough in high school and how we lose our identity depending on who we are with.
The complicated relationship with parents, the "school-only friends", the true friendships you never knew you'd find and the academic validation we all feel we need, while also losing ourselves. This book's got it all!
I feel this is a story every student who's struggling with their identity should read. This and probably every other Alice Oseman book.
