I'm giving it five stars because this book deserves the world and you can not change my mind. However I am too emotionally distraught to actually thoroughly review it, so if you wanna see if it's good, I guess you're just gonna have to read it yourself. :)

3/5 stars:

An entertaining and easy read. It didn't completely connect me to the characters and it was a little slow for my liking.

A solid book honestly. I will admit that for me, it was a fairly slow start. Sometimes the characters behaved in ways that I’m not sure make sense to me in character. However both the primary and secondary romances were terribly lovely. Despite my preference for adult protags I was fond of them all.

Well I loved this. This has been sat in my TBR for ages and I'm so glad I chose it on a whim.

I wasn't aware of the story going into this, but I see the words 'rival magicians apprentices' attached to a love story and I must buy, it's the law.

But this was not what I was expecting. This book is a story of trauma and survival with a romance as the secondary point. This book contained abuse in many forms and what I would give to wrap Wilhelm and Jack up in a hug and never let go.

I loved the historical setting and that such a horrifying tale could contain so many moments of happiness, self-discovery, love and magic.
Plus... found family! (So you know I'm going to melt).
