Set in Berlin, this graphic novel charts the twilight of Berlin's "roaring" twenties, as the country pivots itself towards a right-wing path, which eventually leads to a war. The style is beautiful: sparsely drawn, but with plenty of detail. The atmosphere of interwar Berlin and the confusion and uncertainty felt by many is wonderfully depicted. The characters were well-developed and artfully created on the page. This was an intensely rewarding read.

Also, any book which uses The Second Coming by Yeats for one of its double-page spreads is alright in my eyes.

Beyond the meticulous details of the drawings, this book focuses far more on the Communist side of Berlin in the 20s far more than any other account that I've read. My only criticism is that it was difficult to tell people apart at times, especially the men.
